Alpha tocopherol acetate is commonly used in skincare products such as creams. It will not be oxidized and can penetrate the skin to reach live cells, of which about 5% will be converted into free tocopherol. It is said to have beneficial antioxidant effects. Alpha tocopherol acetate can be used as a substitute for tocopherol itself, as the phenolic hydroxyl group is blocked, providing products with lower acidity and longer shelf life. It is believed that acetate slowly hydrolyzes after being absorbed by the skin, regenerating tocopherol and providing protection against solar ultraviolet rays.
Alpha tocopherol acetate is a colorless, golden yellow, transparent, viscous liquid with a melting point of 25 ℃. It can solidify below 25 ℃ and is miscible with oils and fats.
D-alpha tocopherol acetate is a colorless to yellow, almost odorless, transparent oily liquid. It is usually prepared by esterification of acetic acid with natural d – α tocopherol, and then diluted with edible oil to various contents. It can be used as an antioxidant in food, cosmetics, and personal care products, as well as in feed and pet food.
